Features

This watch inherits the traditional style of the 9S mechanical series while introducing a new dial expression. Inspired by an “icefall” one might encounter on Mt. Iwate, the peak visible from the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, during harsh winter months, the dial captures a striking natural spectacle. An icefall occurs when flowing water gradually freezes in sub-zero temperatures. This enchanting scene is expressed through the ice-blue coloured dial, which features a pattern balancing dynamism and delicacy. The movement is the Calibre 9S85, a high-frequency mechanical movement vibrating at 10 beats per second within a compact 37mm case. Both the case and bracelet are made of Ever-Brilliant Steel, which shines whiter than conventional stainless steel while offering exceptional corrosion resistance.

A dynamic and detailed dial

The city of Hachimantai in Iwate Prefecture is the home of Nanataki, a 30-meter waterfall that originates from a stream that flows down Mt. Iwate. When pure water flows from a waterfall and slowly freezes over time in sub-zero temperatures, it loses air in the process, forming an ethereal, pale blue icefall. This enchanting natural phenomenon is expressed through a dial featuring a pattern that balances dynamism and delicacy, combined with a distinctive ice blue tone.

Case Design in Pursuit of Timeless Beauty

In 1998, Grand Seiko introduced the SBGR001, the first model equipped with the 9R mechanical movement. This watch marked a turning point, defining both tradition and innovation for the brand. The case design of this model inherits the fundamental form of the original while evolving in terms of materials and aesthetics. It aims to be a watch that fits any style and remains a lasting favourite, focusing on the essential qualities of wearability, operability, and legibility. The distortion-free mirror surfaces, achieved through Zaratsu polishing, are finished to create a refined contrast, giving the watch a graceful brilliance.

Ever-Brilliant Steel with superior corrosion resistance

Known as Ever-Brilliant Steel thanks to its brilliant white hue, this special alloy is more resistant to corrosion than the stainless steels used in even the most prestigious watches today. It has a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) value 1.7 times higher than the grade of steel used in most high-end watches. PREN is a widely accepted standard used to measure corrosion resistance.

Calibre 9S85

This high-frequency mechanical movement was developed by rethinking the parts that form the foundation of the watch’s precision, granting the level of torque necessary to maintain a high oscillation rate and realising a practical power reserve of about 55 hours when fully wound.
